Home > What We Do > Cane Creek Project - Grant EPA* requires all states to test streams and rivers for fecal coliforms. Fecal coliforms are normal bacteria found in the guts of humans, livestock and wildlife. Higher numbers in waterways indicates that wastes from these are getting into the water. The EPA provides moneys to the states to reduce these wastes from getting into waterways used for drinking and recreational uses. Cane Creek and Little Cane Creek have been on a consideration list for reducing this coliform problem since 1998. FOLKS has initiated a $430,000 project with the support of a $256,400 grant from EPA/SCDHEC* for a three year project to reduce this problem. FOLKS will work with a number of cooperative partners to accomplish this goal. One of the important goals will be the provision of matching moneys to assist farmers and homeowners fix problems that are contributing to this problem.
